The Seven

A video installation work exploring embodied symbolism through seven sigils, each representative of a female archetype

A short extract from a work commissioned for multimedia exhibition Hidden Lineages, inspired by Mary Magdalene's gospel and led by award-winning storyteller and performance maker Jo Blake.

As the only gospel written in the name of a woman and buried for 1500 years, the Gospel of Mary Magdalene is still viewed by many as illegitimate. This exhibition suggested Magdalene's testimony as emblematic of what has been left out of the sacred in the West - woman, body, earth.

Jo invited three artists to contribute to the broader conversation around this long-denied lineage; Izzy Brittain, Laura Burns and Lisa Lapidge. Each artists' work experiments with hidden lineages through performance, ceremony, ritual, witchcraft, alchemy and embodiment.
